BAGHDAD, Oct 8, 2006 (AFP) - Baghdad police found the bodies of 35 murder
victims scattered around the Iraqi capital Sunday, many of them showing
signs of torture and all shot dead at close range, security officials said.

Earlier, police in Suwayrah south of Baghdad spoke of finding five more
victims floating down the Tigris from the city -- two of them skeletal
remains, three of them beheaded.

The grisly finds came one day after police found 51 bodies in a similar
grim harvest, and at a time when Iraqi and United Nations officials
estimate that more than 100 Iraqis are being killed every day.

Baghdad is in the grip of a sectarian dirty war between rival Sunni and
Shiite factions that has pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war, despite the
deployment of more than 50,000 US and Iraqi troops in the capital.

A security official said that 20 of Sunday's bodies were found in mainly
Sunni west Baghdad and 15 in the mainly Shiite east, where powerful
political and religious militias hold sway in several districts.
