Hey there,

How long did it take the Australian servicemen on this forum to join from when they actually called or went to a recruiting centre? Started the whole process October and I am still waiting on a date for that(told me to call early January and after I did that I was told to call again at the end of January). While I am at it does anyone have any good tips or anything about Assessment Day?

Thanks

Took me 9 months with an opening coming at 7 months after they gave me my date. However I hear these days for Infantry there is about a two year wait at least. Don't worry about assessment day, just be yourself. The questions are simple and look at the Defence website for information.

I started my application February last year, and im enlisting February this year as a CE so that was a 12 month stint.

Thanks for the replies. Seems a long wait is standard then. When I was trying to find a answer online about the time it takes I saw people in the US take weeks to join up. Here I was thinking we still had a recruitment drought.

took me about 3 months i reckon, mind you that was 10 years ago.

Yep pretty similar here... took about two months from initial contact to Assessment Day... that was Aug 01. Best thing you can do for yourself is make sure your admin is squared away so nothing will hold you up. Legal, Medical etc... get your affairs in order so that any questions you might get during the process are easily answered.

As for Pre-Enlistment fitness exam, yeah... go onto the Defence site and get fit first if you aren't already. They've got a four-week pamphlet floating around the net somewhere which takes you from Zero to Kapooka-ready fitness wise - I found it useful at the time.

I can pass the fitness test easy (already tried it a couple times) and I am starting the fitness thing next week (the one month thing you mentioned). Medical cleared fine (hernia surgery and heart murmur) and I assume all my legal stuff has gone through fine. I will call up though to double check, thanks Botak. Thanks for all the replies as well. If you are wondering I am trying to join up as an Army Electronics Technician.

Mine was delayed a bit because I had to go see a specialist about my knee and he was booked out for a couple of months.

Good stuff, good luck with it.

Fitness btw is less of an issue at ARTC than it is afterwards... I know plenty of guys actually lost fitness when I went through (back when the 47 day program was both ARA and Chock)... But it helps to get up to a standard because once you're outta Kapooka, you need to be passing a BFA any day of the week. My unit's Cadre Sgt (I'm a Chock) bitches about it, and he's right - you should just be able to rock up, smash out a BFA or Medical on ANY day.

Apart from the training of basic competencies of course, Kapooka's less about testing you physically and more about testing you psychologically.... dicking you around to see what your reaction and response is going to be. Or at least, it was like that when I was there... the culture there changes from time to time. Just remember that Kapooka is not the Army. It's Kapooka. Just head down, do your time, "stay grey", march out, and then it's all good. :)

Again, best of luck :)

Good post Botak. Most of the PT sessions you do down there they will spend most of the time teaching how to do the activities. After your swim test expect to be to slow and be back in the pool doing tea bags.

If you go Infantry that's where you can expect to be spewing after nearly every PT session 5 days a week during the IET's, twice a day if you're in holding platoon.

your not wrong their, but the last few weeks when i went to singo the pt stopped but my drinking didn't so i lost alot of fitness before hard core, still passed just spewed a s**t load. yer

Yeah same happened on my course because of all the bush. The platoon that was two weeks ahead of me trialled doing PT while out doing the bush ex's, sucked so much they're the only ones who did it. I hear the course is a lot different now though with urban and FOB crap.
