Topic: Most Decorated by the Army, WWII

The U.S. Army hasn't publically proclaimed who is the most decorated combat soldier (infantryman) of WWII:

Officially, The Army awarded Matt Urban and Llewellyn Chislon more combat award "decorations" than Murphy for WWII. They received seven and four decorations each from the Army for WWII after the war was over.

All three soldiers... Murphy, Chilson, and Urban were awarded Legion of Merit medals (decorations) for valor. Chilson as an enlistedman.

Captain (Lt. Col.) Urban was recommended for the Medal of Honor in 1944. The battalion commander who recommended Urban was KIA and the recommendation wasn't processed until the Michgan DAV took personal interest in Urban (7 Purple Hearts) and sent an official MOH recommendation inquiry to the Pentegon in 1979. The Army found the recommendation, approved and awarded Urban the MOH (2-page citation) in 1980. Urban didn't lobby for a MOH.

Foreign decorations are below U.S. military awards in order of precedence and were more or less awarded for the same action as an American decoration was awarded for. Any living veteran who helped liberate France are now eligible to be awarded the French Legion of Honor medal (Calvalier/Knight) by France.

Spend a little bit of time at Sand Hill, Ft. Benning GA and it will become pretty apparent Murphy is the poster child. Paintings of him plastered everywhere.
