Navistar International Corp. said late Monday it received a three-year contract from the U.S. Army valued at $1.28 billion, covering delivery of 7,072 medium tactical vehicles and parts.
The vehicles will include designs for general troop transport, water tankers, wreckers and trucks that carry hazardous material. About half the order will be delivered during the first year of the contract, Navistar said.
The Warrenville-based maker of trucks and diesel engines has moved into the military segment in dramatic fashion under a strategy devised by Chief Executive Dan Ustian.
Its most prominent product to date is the heavily armored MRAP vehicle, designed to provide U.S. troops in Iraq with greater protection against roadside bombs.
