Army ladies want to show off their legs

2007-11-09 00:39

This is the end of out-of-fashion pumps for women in the army. Old fashioned projects from the 90s are to be scrapped. The ladies in uniforms are revolting against gala shoes resembling galoshes. They fight for fashionable and comfortable shoes. And they also want stylish hats - writes DZIENNIK.

A boycott of shoes for women, which army has been purchasing for years, has been lasting for long time. "Pumps for the gala uniform have been visually shortening legs. No matter how shapely the legs were they would look crude in pumps" - explains COL Beata Laszczak, a MoD commissioner to women military service.

This is why women did not want to wear army shoes. When on parades or ceremonial assemblies they would wear their own shoes resembling the official ones. Ladies would also leave at home the winter boots covering the ankle. "They are not likable by women. They are ugly and not comfortable. Ladies want shoes that are timeless, elegant and comfortable" - says COL Laszczak.

The army has decided to design 21st century shoes for women. 14 companies have been selected to design three types of shoes for women: gala shoes, work shoes and warm high boots.

At the end of October a group of 16 women has been judging patterns sent by those manufacturers. Consequently, three companies have been invited to cooperation with the army: Axel from Częstochowa, Glanzbut from Kalwaria Zebrzydowska and Wojas from Nowy Targ. They suggested 12 patterns and then - taking into account feedback from the ladies - have made some modifications.

Work shoes are to be lower than gala shoes and should not have adornments, in order not to distract. Gala shoes are to have taller and thinner heels, about 6-cm tall, and may have some adornments. Both types of shoes are to be more shapely than the current ones. They will have slightly pointed tip and better profiled heel. The long boots will be also more shapely than current winter boots.

Before the military authorizes the official patterns for the entire army the women and technicians will test the shoes. "By the end of November we will buy a trial batch. 45 ladies will be wearing them. The trials will last six months" - informs LT-COL Krzysztof Kacprzak, a commandant of R&D center of uniform services in Łódź. The market is sizable - there are 1300 women serving in the army.

By that time a new hat pattern for Land Forces ladies should be ready too. They want it to be similar to those worn by the Navy ladies. They do not want forage caps, which squash a hair style. "Hats are prettier than forage caps and they do not slide off heads, like the berets" - explains COL Laszczak.

This is not the end of requests for fashion changes in the army. Pretty soon the commandant of the Łódź center will receive a new task: ladies also want elegant flat shoes for the pants.

Izabela Leszczyńska: Here is a battle task for you: How should the women gala shoes look like? Should they confirm to the newest trends?

Tomasz Jacyków, a stylist creating images of known people from politics and from business world: Oh, here one cannot rush after the fashion! Army shoes must be designed for dozens of years, not for a year or two. A uniform should be classical, slightly outdated, but extremely elegant, and the shoes should be shapely. I know that current shoes for army ladies are quite ugly... They need shoes with slightly extended tip, because such tip visually extends a leg. The heel should have 5-8 centimeters and should have nice profile. It cannot be of course a thin stiletto, because comfort is very important in the army, but it should not be a thick low peg! I would choose a so-called French heel, slightly tapering down. A leg looks good on such heel.

Izabela Leszczyńska: What kind of material should be used for shoes?

Tomasz Jacyków: Shoes made of dull lather would look clumsy, as galoshes. They should not be lacquered, because the lacquer goes in and out of fashion quite often. Besides they would stand out too much. I would choose high quality polished lather.

Izabela Leszczyńska: Should a female's shoe be sexy? Will it not disable a masculine part of the army?

Tomasz Jacyków: A golden sandal on a 12-cm stiletto could have such effect... But we are not talking about this. I am imagining a beautiful shoe that fits a foot perfectly. This would not harm anyone.

Izabela Leszczyńska: Can a woman's shoe have some battle functions in extreme situations?

Tomasz Jacyków: One can always hit with it! A stiletto is most dangerous. But even a shoe that is not stiletto can be used to knock somebody unconscious!

Speaking from experience, it is long overdue. About time they got rid of those c**t caps. As long as we are able to continue doing our job, there is nothing wrong with still being a woman.

Besides it will be nice to look like one and not just count on the under garments that allows a woman to feel like one. I hated those granny shoes they issued. My Granny wouldn't even dream of wearing them, that is how bad they are.

Well that is restricted by regs as you know. If it wasn't for the reg the only thing male soldiers would do all day is stare and drool. So the reg is for your benefit not ours.
