The Army says it will cap six old dump sites at Fort Detrick starting next week.
The sites include unlined trenches in which workers dumped chemical and biological waste from the military's germ-warfare defense program from the 1940s through the 1960s, before such practices were outlawed.
Post officials said 100,000 tons of fill dirt and top soil will be trucked in over the next two months. Workers will use the material to build impermeable caps over the dump sites.
The Army said it is working with state and federal environmental regulators to determine what, if any, measures are needed to clean up groundwater contaminated by chemical waste from one of the sites. The source of that contamination was removed more than four years ago.
