A small group of soldiers serving in Afghanistan will run in honor of Pat Tillman several hours before Pat's Run officially takes off in Tempe, Ariz., on Saturday.
In its fourth year, Pat's Run is a 4.2-mile run/walk that honors the No. 42 Tillman wore when he played at Arizona State. (He wore No. 40 with the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.) The run finishes on the 42-yard line of Sun Devil Stadium and expects to draw more than the 13,000 who participated last year. There's also a Pat's Run in Tillman's hometown of San Jose, Calif., on May 3.
Tillman, 27, was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan while serving with the Army Rangers in 2004.
Members of the 48th Forward Surgical Team from Fort Meade, Md., will run in Farah, Afghanistan. Sgt. William Mize says the runners are also supporting the soldiers of D Co. 1-158 Infantry, who served in Afghanistan but have returned home and will run Saturday in Tempe.
"Although I'm not from Arizona, I have known about the legacy of Pat Tillman," Mize wrote in an e-mail. "All of us have visited the Pat Tillman USO building at Bagram Airfield and were thankful to be able to relax, call home and feel at home. What better way could we honor his memory than running in Afghanistan."
