So, I've been looking into buying an electric bass guitar to learn how to play...Anyone have any suggestions on brand names? I've done some research, and I would like any insider tips. Thanks, guys!

Ah, I play regular guitar, can't really help you. Squier has mid-quality products, Fender and Gibson are old faves, it really depends on your price range. But the most important thing is to get a box that fits YOU. It's a lot like buying a custom firearm or bow.
