pretty sure this is ancient Greek. Can anyone ID the speaker? Thanks

"It is fitting that all the young men should go off to fight, not only the strongest and the bravest. In this way, our armies will not be led by ignorant men, nor will our cities be governed by cowards."

Thucididyes

mis-remembered the quote. It was closer to:

"A nation that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its laws made by cowards and its wars fought by fools."

Still, the essence is the same: in the successful state, all should study and all must serve.

This one?? :smil:

"The Nation that makes a great distinction between its scholars and its
warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools."
-Thucydides

The quote comes in several different versions since it's probably translated from old Greek, but it should mean the same.

More from the Greeks,
"Of every one hundred men, Ten shouldn't even be there, Eighty are nothing but targets, Nine are real fighters...We are lucky to have them...They make the battle.
Ah, but the One, One of them is a Warrior...and He will bring the others back."
-Hericletus (circa 500 B.C.)

The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding, go out and meet it. Thucydides

An army of deer led by a Lion is more to be feared than an army of lions being led by a deer. Chabrias, 410-375 B.C., Athenian General
