WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- American Airlines has agreed to settle a class-action suit brought by pilots who said they were unfairly denied benefits while on leave for military service, the U.S. Justice Department said on Thursday.
Under the settlement, American has agreed to pay 353 pilots a total of $345,742 for the loss of vacation and sick leave, and provide another $215,000 in sick-leave credits for currently employed pilots.
Grace Chung Becker, acting assistant attorney general for civil rights, said the pilots affected by the settlement were those who had taken less than 16 days service leave per year, mostly for training.
It is the first class-action suit brought under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994, aimed at protecting the civilian employment rights of service members, the department said.
