American actions during d-day

i really dont mean to cause offence to anybody - but my granda told me about an moment during D-Day when his ship (he was a transporting American troops ashore) dropped off an american transoprt boat and returned atleast twice because they didnt want to land because of the germans 'shooting at us'. and in the end he had to go further out so they could no longer return.

does anybody no anything about this because i cant find anything on the net - thanks

(dont take 'patriotic offence' it is a genuine enquiry)
 
I think that you will find that this one just one of the rumors that get started on the battlefield. You only have to look at the way Americans got stuck in on Omaha beach to put this story to rest.
 
yes im sure they fought bravely but im not asking about that.

i dont believe for a second my granda would tell a random lie and it isnt a rumour because he witnessed it. if you dont no anyhting about it thats fine.
 
alex123....what unit was your grandfather with on D Day, if have this it might just throw some light on the matter.
