Michael Schumacher's manager has demanded an apology from Fernando Alonso after Alonso accused the Formula One great of being the most 'unsporting driver'.

Alonso, the reigning F1 champion, took a swipe at Schumacher and Ferrari in the Spanish press after being penalised in the most recent Grand Prix in Italy.

Willi Weber, Schumacher's long-time manager, has not let the comments slide though. He told German newspaper Bild that he thought the Renault driver's comments were 'totally below the belt'.

"I regard Alonso as a brilliant driver, but his behaviour right now is just pitiful. Michael will give him a suitable answer on the track,'' Weber said.

With three races to go this year, Alonso leads Schumacher in the drivers' championship by only two points. The war of words that has ensued and the fact that it is Schumacher's final year driving will ensure that the championship becomes even more hotly contested.

Schumacher said on F1.com that retirement is at the back of his mind for now as he looks to win an eighth world championship

"We (Ferrari) have almost made up the gap in the drivers' championship and already overtaken Renault in the constructors' standings," he said.

"Both titles are within reach. From now on, all that counts for us is the title. Everything else can wait."
