The project 941 or Akula, Russian "Акула" ("Shark") class submarine (NATO reporting name: Typhoon) is a type of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine deployed by the Soviet Navy in the 1980s. With a maximum displacement of 33,800 tons, the Typhoons are the largest class of submarine ever built,[6] large enough to accommodate decent living facilities for the crew, when the submarine remained submerged for months on end.[7] The source of the NATO reporting name remains unclear, although it is often claimed to be related to the use of the word "Typhoon" ("Тайфун") by Leonid Brezhnev in a 1974 speech while describing a new type of nuclear ballistic missile submarine. Soviet doctrine for these vessels was to have them launch SLBMs while submerged under the arctic ice, avoiding the traversal of the GIUK gap to remain safe from the enemy attack submarines and anti-submarine forces. Technically Typhoons were also able to successfully deploy their long-range nuclear missiles while moored at their docks.

Borei

The Borei class (Russian: Борей; sometimes transliterated as Borey, also known as the Dolgorukiy class, is a ship class of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine produced and operated by the Russian Navy. The class is intended to replace the Delta III and Typhoon classes now in Russian Navy service. The class is named after Boreas, the North wind.

General characteristics

Type: Ballistic missile submarine Displacement: 14,720 t (14,488 long tons) surfaced
24,000 t (23,621 long tons) submerged Length: 170 m (557 ft 9 in) Beam: 13.5 m (44 ft 3 in) Draught: 10 m (32 ft 10 in) Propulsion: 1 × ОК-650В nuclear reactor
1 × AEU steam turbine
1 × shaft and propeller Speed: 29 knots (33 mph; 54 km/h)[1] Range: Unlimited except by food stores Test depth: planned 450m Complement: 107 officers and men Armament: 16 × Bulava SLBMs
6 × 533 mm torpedo tubes

The Bulava missile doesn't really work so well...so probably the Typhoon still. Although there's only one operational.

There is an interesting conspiracy according to which the missile is actualy able to fly, it's just sort of sabotage by a defense minister.

Well, anyway... There is a schedule today to perform the next test launch in the first half of August from Akula. After that they will launch 2 more missiles untill the New Year from Akula and maybe from Borei. If it goes well they will perform a salvo launch from Borei in 2011 and finally put the poor missile into service.

Mmmm.. i feel yet another generals' star shower...

I hope it all goes well. Our subs are the only thing we have that can counteract the Yankees' aircraft carriers lol We must take good care of them.
