"More of the Same" President's plans for Iraq.
THE AIRWAVES RESOUND TO THE CLASH OF “MORE OF THE SAME”
The latest and greatest hubbub continues to be the flap over Bush’s latest pronouncements (Plan for victory in Iraq). Republicans are gushing all over the place blessing and praising the same tired old platitudes, slogans, clichés and fancy footwork that have become the trademark of Bush’s presidency. Maybe he has trouble reading a speech from a teleprompter, maybe he has trouble opening a locked door, often he has trouble pronouncing words correctly, but one thing he has been able to do is to look America straight in the eye and continuously utter his famous one liners with a straight face: “We will stay the course and will not leave Iraq until the mission is complete.” (and) “We will accept nothing but complete victory.” What Republicans and Bush supporters alike tend to overlook is the obvious lack of substance to the rhetoric that has run throughout his campaign to sell his war in Iraq to the American public and the rest of the world and they seem to think we have entered the “end game“ without one shred of evidence that the end is even in sight. The pundits seem to gloss over all of Bush’s policy shortcomings with a disregard that I find fascinating. The mainstream press acts as though rocking the boat and asking the hard questions would place them into the proverbial eye of the storm - after all, every time that anyone (citizen, congressman, senator, or media reporter) has the utter gall to pressure the president or one of his mouthpieces for a yes or no answer instead of accepting another evasive answer or change of subject, the proverbial doodoo hit’s the fan. Bush, Chaney, administration spokespersons, republicans, and pro-Bushites ALL go on the warpath and attack not only the message but the messenger. There has been more bloodshed as a result of verbal attacks in the halls of congress (Republican spokespersons), press conferences (Bush and Chaney), Whitehouse press briefings (Whitehouse press agent), and assorted pro-Bushite rallies than there has been on the battlefields of Iraq. Hard questions have been asked on many occasions but the persons asking have not been willing to stick their necks out too far to get the real answer for fear of the reprisals that hang over everyone’s heads when dealing with an administration that is as secretive and vindictive as the Bush administration seems to be. Never in American history has there been an administration which has been so unwilling to work towards compromise than this one seems to be. Bush’s intransigence has extended to the point that (rumor) he has even taken umbrage to one or two of his father’s suggestions. If Bush junior is unwilling to even listen to his own father for input and guidance, what chance is there for a compromise solution to the Iraqi issue that would be acceptable to the honorable gentlemen that live on the other side of the aisle (Democrats).
RESOLUTION OF A CONUNDRUM: Will hate prevail?
How the world will view the United States in the future will hinge in large part on how well we resolve the proverbial Gordian Knot that exists in Iraq (diverse groups with hatreds of other groups that has existed for thousands of years). Wars and battles that took place as many as two thousand years ago have caused a great divide that has spit Iraq into diverse splinter groups that will have to learn to work together for the common good for the first time in their histories. Can it be done? No one knows whether these hatreds can be moderated enough to make the compromises that will allow these groups to learn from one another that peace is much better than continuous warfare. The rest of the world can only stand on the sidelines and hope that all parties will give each other the freedom and room to grow and forgive each other. Only time will tell - in the meantime all we can do is to continue to try and win the hearts and minds of enough of the Iraqis to ensure that they will be able to defend themselves and to flourish so we can finally remove our troops from their country. A free and democratic Iraq is the final solution which is being pursued by the forces currently serving in Iraq. Peace in Iraq is the hope and prayer of all Americans.
THIS WILL DEFINITELY HAPPEN - ONE YEAR, TWO YEARS, THREE YEARS - NO ONE KNOWS FOR SURE.
