Arlington-- The Civil Air Patrol will hold its annual winter meeting beginning March 1 on the patrol’s 65th anniversary. The group plans to use the occasion to lobby Congress for additional funding to expand its mission.
As many as 200 patrolmen and regional commanders, along with nearly 30 cadets, will gather at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington to promote and commemorate their branch, holding a time capsule dedication as part of the ceremony.
“It’s just to say we’re here, and we’re doing something important,” spokesman Jim Tynan told The Examiner on Thursday. “It’s all about letting folks know we’re here, and we’re here to help.”
The Air Patrolmen will also launch a new program called Wreaths Across America, an effort in cooperation with the Worcester Wreath Company to place wreaths on every veteran’s grave in the country, Tynan said.
The 6,000-member, all-volunteer Air Patrol provides homeland security services including border patrol and aerial reconnaissance missions, as well as emergency relief and aerospace education programs.
The Civil Air Patrol draws its funding from the Department of Defense and remains the cheapest form of air border patrol in the armed services, costing approximately $100 of government money to fly a plane for one hour, Air Patrol General Tony Pinva said.
“Missions are being stopped because of funding issues,” General Pinva said. “But it’s relatively cheaper to use our people, and it’s really good for the country because we already have the people [to operate].”
