Citing “serious threats,” Denmark closed its embassy in Afghanistan and relocated all staff members, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, Daniel Laursen, said in a telephone interview. He said that Denmark’s embassy in Algeria was also evacuated and closed this week and that a separate threat prompted that closing. The Netherlands also closed its embassy in Afghanistan and placed its staff in a temporary location “due to the security situation,” said a Foreign Ministry spokesman, Han Peters.
The threats against Denmark came 10 days after Danish security services raised the threat level against Danish nationals and interests abroad, and two months after Danish newspapers reprinted, after a plot to kill the artist, a cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad wearing a bomb as a turban. The cartoon was one of 12 that set off violent protests in 2006 by Muslims around the world. In the Netherlands last month, the right-wing politician Geert Wilders posted a short film critical of the Koran on the Internet.
