Five police officers were killed and one of Kabul’s highest-profile police commanders was wounded in two attacks on the northern outskirts of Kabul early Wednesday. In the first attack, a remote-controlled roadside bomb killed three officers near a police checkpoint. Gen. Ali Shah Paktiawal, chief of the criminal investigation department, was wounded and two of his guards were killed when their vehicle was hit by a second roadside bomb as it approached the scene of the first attack, police officials said. General Paktiawal was well known for rushing to the scenes of terrorist bombings and for personally leading raids on those suspected of being drug traffickers. A police spokesman blamed Taliban militants for the blasts.
