KABUL, Afghanistan — A roadside bomb explosion killed a Canadian soldier and wounded another and an Afghan interpreter Friday, a military spokesman said.
Corp. Matthew J. McCully was the 55th Canadian to die during the country's military mission in Afghanistan, officials said. It also brings to 55 the number of U.S. and NATO troops killed in the violence-plagued nation this year.
The blast occurred during a joint Canadian-Afghan patrol in the Zhari district of Kandahar province, Canadian Navy Lt. John Nethercott said.
NATO's International Security Assistance Force said Friday a gunbattle between Taliban fighters and ISAF forces wounded another soldier.
The NATO statement did not say where that operation took place or the soldier's nationality.
In the southern province of Helmand, U.S.-led coalition and Afghan troops killed three suspected Taliban fighters Friday when a firefight broke out during a raid on a compound, the coalition said in a statement. Troops detained a suspected militant, and there were no civilian or coalition casualties, it said.
More than 1,800 people have died as insurgency-related violence in Afghanistan has spiked this year, according to an Associated Press count based on figures from U.S., NATO and Afghan officials.
Shuhabuddin Athul, a purported Taliban spokesman, claimed Friday that the militant group had kidnapped two foreign soldiers, a man and a woman, during fighting in the Gereshk district of Helmand province.
Athul offered no proof and wouldn't provide names or nationalities. He also said Taliban fighters destroyed three tanks during a battle.
An ISAF spokesman, Maj. John Thomas, said there were no missing soldiers in Helmand province.
The U.N.'s World Food Program condemned a series of attacks and looting of WFP food trucks in the south and west of Afghanistan that have resulted in the loss of more than 500 tons of food aid valued at $350,000.
WFP said it was working with authorities to increase security. The most recent attack was on Wednesday, the 20th such incident in the last 12 months, it said.
