One more thing to add to this very informative thread is.

Spybot and adwaware are very good. The best thing about them is they are free.

Also we should also add a firewall to our computers since leaving the ports open to hackers is very very bad.

there are some free ones out there that do really well and keep your computer safe.

Here is a list of free stuff I found that keeps your computer safe from hackers

Many free anti spy programs

Free Outpost Firewall

Free zone Alarm firewall

AVG Free Antivirus Home Edition

Also some very good online virus scans (Also free)

I have been working on computers for quite a while now. I also post at 2 different software forums. The programs that I have posted here are safe and with good reputation. I would never post something here that was not up to standard.

But please do not take my word for it. If you wish do the research you will find out that these programs are very good. I use several of them. I have been spyware free and virus free for a very ling time.

Have a great day everybody

If I may add to this, you should also get an anti-hijack type of prog. Such as HighjackThis or CWShredder. They help eliminate a few things that adware removal progs miss.

They take care of registry things and such, like certain adware changes your registry and hijacks your browser, sending you wherever it wants (definitally not a good thing).

Usually what I do, is run Ad-Aware every day (more if I browse a lot at one time), Spybot every 2 or 3 days, and CWShredder every week, since I started that regimine, I haven't had any probs whatsoever.

Very nice and informative posts Swift and Nero.

I didn't add info about firewalls and anti-hijack software, but I have recently experienced that I should have..

Somehow my DNS IPs had been changed into something completely wrong, and whne I tried to access certain sites (cnn, yahoo, and MY OWN SITE!!) I just got forwarded to www. www. milforum. com. org etc.. (com.org added to every URL) DON't click on that link, they don't deserve the attention!
I first thought i was spyware, but later found out that it was my DNS settings that had been "hijacked"...

I have two pc's connected trough a broadband router with the net. The Router has a firewall, both pc's have Norton Personal Firewall installed, both run Norton Antivirus and both are scanned with Spybot S&D regularly, and still, sometimes, Spybot catches something... The people who do this should be tried and shot. Okay, maybe not tried.
