Actress Diaz Apologises for Mao Bag

US actress Cameron Diaz has apologised for wearing a bag with a political slogan that evoked painful memories in Peru. The voice of Princess Fiona in the animated Shrek films visited the Incan city of Machu Picchu in Peru's Andes wearing an olive green bag emblazoned with a red star and the words "Serve the People", perhaps Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong's most famous political slogan, printed in Chinese. The bags are marketed as fashion accessories in some cities around the world, but in Peru the slogan evokes memories of theMaoist Shining Path insurgencythat fought the government in the 1980s and early 1990s in a bloody conflict that left nearly 70,000 people dead."I sincerely apologise to anyone I may have inadvertently offended," Diaz said in a statement. "The bag was a purchase I made as a tourist in China and I did not realise the potentially hurtful nature of the slogan printed on it."One prominent Peruvian human rights activist said Diaz should have been a little more aware of local sensitivities when picking her accessories

I see the same thing all over the USA with idiots wearing those Che Guevara T-Shirts. Che Guevara is a painful reminder of the communist government of Cuba and many other Latin American Nations.

As for the Mao Zedong bags, I see those sold in large chain department stores along with the Che Guevara T-Shirts.

Macy's
Marshalls
JC Penny
Burdines
Sears
Etc....

Mao bag and Che Guevara t-shirt selling to Americans are make no sense to me. I don't know, that's just plain idiot. I mean, where is the Swastika flag in the stores? Yeah, they're evil like Mao and Che Guevara.

Che was a communist terrorist...

Well I am sure as big supporters of those who aren't politically correct you guys will be supporting her and others right to do as they please even if it goes as far as wearing Che T-Shirt or Mao bag anything less would be double standards.

Hehehe. Me either...On a serious note, I doubt she knew what the bag actually said, or knew who had said it...Could've been a Chinese proverb for all she knew...Sounds the like...

Once again, political correctness is making stories where there are none. She's carrying a bag around with some Chinese characters on them, Whoopity do!
You don't see me beating people wearing a shirt with a British flag on it or cursing at someone wearing a t-shirt that says "Praise Allah!" on it yet those could also invoke 'painful memories' of past events. Water off a duck's back, water under the bridge, water <adjective> <noun>. Get over it and ***** about something that is truly wrong.

It's wrong to wear picture of a terrorist on your shirt and walk around offending people. Would you like to sit next to some one wearing a t-shirt with picture of Osama Bin laden on it saying september 11th was great or something like that?!?

What I would like them to do and what they have the right to do are two totally separate things. Besides, the message on Diaz's bag isn't even that negative "Serve the People" that's kind of the government's job.

A variety of reasons.

- No Money
- I'm not a woman
- I don't have any belts that match the color
- I'm not gay
- Man-bags aren't really my thing
- Holding it would tilt my center of gravity and cause me to walk with a limp
- Never been to China
- Not a big fan of anything that says "Made in China" on it other than fireworks
- Does it come in beige?
- Everything I need I can carry in my pockets
- I'm not cool enough
- Low self esteem

That pretty much sums it up. Next question?

How about a Che Guevara t-shirt then?

Not a big fan of communism, I've never considered him a bad guy though. Sure he wasn't the nicest character, but when put against Mao, Stalin, Kim and other leaders of worldwide socialist movements I don't think Che is that bad. Granted my experience with his feats/accomplishments/atrocities is not very deep, but he seems to me more like a fighter going after true military goals than a terrorist targeting women and children. Guerrilla warfare may be a ***** to fight, but I don't consider it any less honorable than standing 80 paces apart and firing a muzzle loader.

Fair enough. But if I were to give you one of them for free, would you have accepted that?

Are you willing to wear or carry something that offends many people? Say a t-shirt with "9/11 was an inside job" or "Stalin rocks"... something like that.

Will you be wearing one if it was handed to you for free?

If it was something I believed, yes, I would wear it. If I was unaware of the items meaning/symbolism but liked... the pretty colors, yes, I would ware it. Hell I may even wear something just to annoy people, but I would not knowingly wear an item of clothing that I knew would offend many people if I did not believe it. For example, you give me a shirt that says "eat pork" on it and send me to a Muslim nation that doesn't have punishments for wearing such a shirt and I will wear it because dammit I love pork. But once again, I won't wear it if I don't believe it.

This seems strangely appropriate.
