'39.

I used to be a huge fan of Queen when I was younger (that was long before I heard some of Bulldog's works which would make me forget about Queen and beginners of that kind), and I still like their music.
I was singing one of their songs this morning and I thought maybe I should post it on the boards. Did anyone know it? It's called '39 and it is in the album A Night At The Opera (1975), the band's third fourth official album and the one with the more famous Bohemian Rhapsody. Despite the name it is NOT about World War Two as many may think. In fact, The song is about an astronaut who travels to a distant place at near the speed of light. Because of the time dilation that takes place at these speeds, he and his crew return home 100 years later. He has aged only a year but sadly finds that his wife has long passed on and that he is about the same age as his grandchildren. The reason behind the song title is that it's the 39th song on the band's albums.
I like the song, has a bit of an old-fashioned kind of country beat in it and I suggest listening to it if you get the chance.

In the year of thirty-nine
Assembled here the volunteers
In the days when lands were few
Here the ship sailed out into the blue and sunny morn
The sweetest sight ever seen
And the night followed day
And the story tellers say
That the score brave souls inside
For many a lonely day
Sailed across the milky seas
Ne'er looked back never feared never cried

Don't you hear my call
Though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I'll take your hand
In the land that our grand-children knew

In the year of thirty-nine
Came a ship in from the blue
The volunteers came home that day
And they bring good news
Of a world so newly born
Though their hearts so heavily weigh
For the earth is old and grey
Little darlin' we'll away
But my love this cannot be
Oh so many years have gone
Though i'm older but a year
Your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me

Don't you hear my call
Though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
Write your letters in the sand
For the day I'll take your hand
In the land that our grand-children knew

Don't you hear my call
Though you're many years away
Don't you hear me calling you
All your letters in the sand
Cannot heal me like your hand
For my life, still ahead, pity me.
