31 Americans, 7 Afghans killed in helicopter crash

Is there any evidence of the Taliban possessing any more specialized AA weapons? I have often wondered why the Chinooks aren't more vulnerable to ground fire.

The Nook was downed by an RPG as a QRF were heading out to aid Allied forces in heavy contact.

Early reports say 25 US SOF. 22 SEALs from DEVGRU, 7 Afgh commandoes. (3 crew?)

( ) is own guess.

This is a devastating loss for American SOF. Those were some of the best combat troops and pilots in the world.. RIP warriors.

The BBC's Quentin Sommerville in Kabul says it is rare for the Taliban to shoot down aircraft.

The Taliban say they have modified their rocket-propelled grenades to improve their accuracy but that may not be true, our correspondent says.

well... sending all on one lift or one bird doesn't make sense...

and chinooks have 3 gunners... i doubt they'd go without them knowing that they're qrf

not sure how many pilots but most usually have 2

that's 5 ppl just on the flight crew

1.The questions that crop up are:
a. Chinook takes 23 soldiers with all the gear, etc. Why did they shove in 38? Similar thing happened in the Osama raid.
b. Why a daylight op when the night would give the SEALS all advantages and the Afghans the disadvantages?
c. Only one chopper!! There were no stand-by's or choppers/aircraft to provide protection. Isn't that odd?
d. Obviously this was a trap where the team was lured into. This has been a favorite tactics of the Afghans against the Soviets or the British - and of the Mongols in the olden days.
e. Obviously US field intel ends with paying protection money local Maliks(tribal chiefs).

2. Were the soldiers drunk? Do they drink during or before an op? We hear reports here and there testifying to the poor discipline in US troops - including SEALS. Their morale/motivation/indoctrination level appear low.

3. The soldier of today is an educated man well aware of what is going around. He won't be a canon fodder like his predecessors fifty years back. Therefore, in any op establishing The High Moral Ground is important.

1 a.) They probably showed in as many bodies as they could as they were on their way out to provide reinforcements to a Ranger unit in heavy contact.

b.) They didn´t choose the time of the operation, part of being QRF is sort of going when needed ya know?

c.) During the Osama raid there were other choppers in the air (amongst others the one that picked up the bodies from the crashed one..
Taking a GUESS at this makes me think there were only one Helo available at that particular moment as this was NOT a PREPLANNED raid.

d.) This situation seems to be rather like Opertion Red wings and the Downed QRF Helo.
Not the first time it happens and probably not going to be the last one since I don´t forsee us changing our TTP,s to NOT coming to own troops aid when they are under heavy fire.

e.) Haha, ok soo.. Was that little nugget on information a question or a statement?
If a question what about it is unclear to you?
Fact is most of the nations in The Stan are paying money for intel. That is sort of protection money I guess since it help keep your soldiers as safe as possible when knowing the enemy disposition and areas of intrest.

2. Are you retarded? Why would you assume the soldiers were drunk?
I doubt there is a morale problem is devgru.
If you got other information, provide sources.
Motivation and morale are probably at an all time high after getting Bin Jihaden.

3. What are you on about? Over Talis and AQ we´d be digging quite a long time before NOT being on the morale highground.
Not ONE single report of Allied soldiers decapitating captives as of yet.

But you would know all this since your profile indicates you having served in the military at some point in your life?
