KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 15 — A roadside bomb killed three German police officers and wounded another on the outskirts of Kabul on Wednesday morning, German officials said. A Briton working for a private security firm was shot dead in Kabul in the afternoon.
The Germans, police trainers, were killed as they drove to a firing range, German officials said. Afghans who saw the attack said a powerful roadside bomb had destroyed the men’s vehicle.
“We heard a big explosion,” said Ubaid Muhammad, a local shopkeeper. “When we rushed toward the scene, we saw pieces of human bodies.”
Later, Richard Adamson, a manager for the British private security firm ArmorGroup, was shot by unknown attackers on the street. Christopher Beese, a company spokesman, said Afghan police officers and company officials were investigating the killing, but he declined to give further details.
In eastern Afghanistan, American and Afghan military forces carried out an operation in the Tora Bora region against insurgents who American officials described as “Al Qaeda and other violent extremist fighters.”
Capt. Vanessa R. Bowman, an American spokeswoman, said the area was “an ideal environment to conceal enemy support bases and training sites, as well as plan and launch attacks aimed at terrorizing innocent civilians.”
Qaeda fighters fought a fierce battle with American-backed Afghan forces in Tora Bora in December 2001. Osama bin Laden is believed to have commanded Qaeda forces in the area before fleeing into Pakistan. American officials declined to give details about the nationality or number of insurgents being attacked.
The officials said there were no substantiated reports of civilian casualties from the operation. This year, Afghan officials have complained that American airstrikes have killed dozens of Afghan civilians and have called for greater restraint by American forces.
