25 thinking of joining military-few questions, contacts etc.

Not worried about my age or ability to perform but...I have a few minor questions about the US military

1. I wear contacts, not all the time but pretty much when doing important stuff. Does the military allow you to wear contacts or do you have to wear those eyeglasses I see some soldiers wear.

2. Is the mens shower rooms like those open showers where you have no privacy? (no joke, I'm serious)

3. What's the mood like? I'm slightly shy and quiet, I joke around but usually with a smaller group. Not the type to go out on the town, I don't drink or smoke. Would I fit in generally?

4. Do I pick my course or is it chosen based on my skills? Let's say I join the US Army?

The reason I'm thinking about joining is that after high school I was going to join but I got a scholarship to Univ. of Memphis then, I don't know I just got tired of life and everything I dropped out and since then bounced from tech job to tech job. Computer Help Desk, Repair etc.....now I'm, tired of jobs downsizing and laying me off and want something stable for a few years.

1. during basic training and AIT, you will not be allowed to wear contacts. Once you are at your first duty, station, you are more than welcome to wear them again. In Iraq, no one is suppose to wear them due to the sand storms. There was a huge push at Ft. Campbell for all soldiers with glasses to get corrective laser eye surgrery.

2. In basic and AIT, you will have those wonderful group showers. Its something that we all go through. If you are single, you will live in the barracks at your first duty station. The new barracks have 2 man rooms and a bathroom. The older ones still have community bathrooms

3. You are like me in the way you do not like to smoke, drink or go out on the town. In this case, you will be the minority in the barracks. Although you might be labeled the quiet guy with "no life" like I did, no one is going to bother you too much. There be plenty of guys in the Army who spend their entire weekends playing video games.

4. Before you sign up, you will take the ASVAB. The test has basic math, verbal, reading, math, science, electronic and mechanic type questions. Your test results will be broken down into subscore in a variety of military categories (ex: Artillery, electronics). A score of 110 or higher in each is real good. Those scores and the needs of the Army will dictate what job you can get. If there is nothing you like, you can just walk away.
 
Everything he said. Except: During AIT you should be able to wear contacts depending on what your particular MOS is. If you go to an advanced combat training school after Bsci Training then it is not advised to wear them.


As for socializing. Well that is up to the individual, but Doody put it pretty much the way it is. There are a few people I have worked with that do not smoke, drink, OR swear/cuss. They fit in fine as they had other common interests with the people they worked with.
 
can someone answer this

I am currently in the national guard. I am going to sign up for active duty army as soon as I get back from the hurricane katrina relief effort. Briefly....I qualify for Federal OCS and want to go active duty but I am concerned about my duty station. Is there anywhere that I can look to see about vacancies at duty stations so that I may get the duty station that I want. I know they give prior enlisted or for the matter anyone who is enlisting three choices of duty stations. Where can I look to see about duty stations that need 74D (chemical ops specialists)? Thank u guys in advance.

Everything that he said except that where I went to AIT at Ft. Huachuca you were allowed to wear your civilian eye wear. And the barracks were alright they were 2 to 4 man rooms which were suites and you shared a latrine with the other room.

I love the army it has done allot of good for me. Mainly in the department of physical fitness now hehe. But I was in the same situation as you were bouncing from tech jobs and layoffs.
