BAGHDAD, Sept 5, 2006 (AFP) - Insurgents and death squads killed at least 20
Iraqis in attacks in and around Baghdad on Tuesday, police and medics said.
In the bloodiest incident, rebels ambushed a police patrol with machine guns
and rocket launchers north of the capital near the town of Baquba. Five
officers were killed before the gang escaped, police said.
Baquba is in a mixed Sunni and Shiite region in the grip of a vicious
sectarian turf war.
Two civilians were gunned down in the town's market on Tuesday and police
found two bullet-riddled corpses; a soldier and a female school teacher.
Assassins also killed five civilians in separate attacks around Baghdad,
according to a medic at the Yarmuk hospital.
Two more people were killed when suspected Sunni extremists ambushed Shiite
pilgrims heading out of Baghdad towards the holy city of Karbala, he added.
Four police commandos were also brought to hospital in Yarmuk after being
wonded in a roadside bomb attack, the doctor added.
Suspected Sunni insurgents also slammed mortars into two Shiite villages
north of Baghdad, Al-Rassul and Khaluf, killing three civilians, police
said.
Meanwhile, bombers attacked the home in the northern city of Samarra of
Sheikh Jassim Muntaz, an outspoken critic of the Al-Qaeda network.
Three people, including the sheikh's brother were wounded in the attack,
police said, but bombers struck again when a car was carrying them to
hospital.
Two men and a young girl were killed in the follow-up blast, police said.
The attacks came one day after 33 corpses of tortured murder victims were
found on the streets of Baghdad.
