BAGHDAD, Iraq_Two British soldiers were killed and a third was seriously
wounded by a roadside bomb Monday north of Basra, the British military said.

The soldiers had been traveling in an armored land rover known as a "snatch
vehicle" whilst escorting a reconstruction team in Ad Dayr, north of Basra,
said spokesman Maj. Charlie Burbridge. The wounded soldier was airlifted to
a hospital by helicopter.

The identities of the soldiers were withheld pending notification of their
families.

Around 7,200 British troops are based in Iraq, mostly in the south. The
deaths of the two soldiers on Monday brings to 117 the number of British
soldiers to have died here since the 2003 invasion.

British Defense Ministry officials in London have said British forces could
be cut from their current level to between 3,000 and 4,000 by mid-2007.

British officials have repeatedly spoken of handing over control to Iraqi
forces in 2007.
