BAGHDAD, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- The human casualties of the suicide attack
at the main market near the holiest Shiite shrine of Imam Ali mosque in the
southern Iraqi city of Najaf on Thursday reached to 157 people killed and
wounded, an Iraqi Defense Ministry statement said on Friday.
"The criminal incident in Najaf on Thursday resulted in killing 35 people
and wounding 122 others, including Iranians," the statement said.
It said the blast took place when a suicide bomber wearing explosive
belt blew himself up at a busy checkpoint near the shrine of Imam Ali.
Fourteen centuries ago, the attacker targeted the field in front of the
shrine where hundreds of Shiite pilgrims gather to commemorate the death of
Zainab, daughter of Imam Ali, the cousin of prophet Muhammed and sister of
Imam Hussien, who was killed in Kerbala
