Twelve victims of an accident on a new Russian nuclear submarine were buried Wednesday with military honors near the shipyard where they worked. Twenty people died Saturday when the fire-extinguishing system on the submarine went off unexpectedly and asphyxiated them by releasing toxic Freon gas, officials said. Many of those aboard were technicians from the shipbuilding plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, near Russia’s Pacific coast, who were on board the submarine to conduct sea trials when the accident happened. Several thousand people waited outside the plant to file past the open coffins, above. The coffins were then taken in a procession through the streets to a cemetery.
