"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them."

We will remember them.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

In my last unit we , together with all the students of the military school, had to go to the local military cemetery on that day to hear some speeches made by local politicians. Sometimes there was a military Scotsman playing the bagpipes. Lots of his countrymen were buried there.

The Veteran
May 1916
Margaret Postgate Cole

We came upon him sitting in the sun
Blinded by war, and left. And past the fence
There came young soldiers from the Hand and Flower,
Asking advice of his experience.

And he said this, and that, and told them tales,
And all the nightmares of each empty head
Blew into air; then, hearing us beside,
"Poor chaps, how'd they know what it's like?" he said.

And we stood there, and watched him as he sat,
Turning his sockets where they went away,
Until it came to one of us to ask "And you're how old?"
"Nineteen, the third of May."

45,000 to 50,000 Danes participated in WW 1, the vast majority in the British, Canadian, Australian, New Zaland, South Africa, Rhodesian, French, and American Army. Approximately 5,000 Danes was conscripted into the German army.

Sag mir wo die Männer sind
Wo sind sie geblieben
Sag mir wo die Männer sind
Was ist gescheh'n
Sag mir wo die Männer sind
Zogen fort der Krieg beginnt
Wann wird man je verstehn
Wann wird man je verstehn

Sag wo die Soldaten sind
Wo sind sie geblieben
Sag wo die Soldaten sind
Was ist gescheh'n
Sag wo die Soldaten sind
Über Gräbern weht der Wind
Wann wird man je verstehn
Wann wird man je verstehn

Niemals vergessen.
We will remember them.

To all those on this forum who have served their country - I, as one of those whose freedom you fought for, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I attended my local service despite having done a 12 hour night shift and had about 3 hours sleep! :coffee: Some things are just too important to miss.

About 200 turned out which was pleasing to see and we had a march through the town centre. I felt honoured to stand beside the WW2 veterans.

We rounded it off by heading to the pub to raise our pint glasses to fallen comrades.

Lest we forget. :salute:
