Russia has just discovered about 100 modern tanks that were left abandoned in the country's Ural Mountains.
The T-80 tanks were parked on the side of a road, 100km from Yekaterinburg, and video clips that were aired on Russian TV showed locals climbing all over them.

Russian military prosecutors are now investigating how the battle tanks came to be left there, state news agency RIA reported.

The country is restructuring its military at the moment after Russian media said they only need half of their 200,000 tanks, Reuters revealed.

Strangely nobody seems to have stolen one? The Russian Mafia isn´t what it was anymore... :(

Yeah.
in the Ukraine the mafia stole whole bridges and sold them for scrap! Amazing!

And not only there, in just the last month on our island (!) 140 km (!) of copper wiring were simply torn from the lamp poles, leaving an overall damage of more than 570k Euros behind for a profit of maybe 15k for the (minly Ukrainian/Rumainan) thieves. Apart from this, every month we have about 5 villages average of our 200 total completely without electicity for 2 weeks for such attacks (they simply open a lamp ppost, attch a cable to the wires to a 4x4 and pull, devastating all the elctrical installations in the process... You ever lived 2 weeks without current in a household with fridge, ice, water pumps, TV and internet?).

In Madrid (the capital!) it was 1000 km cable last 10 month, it sells to CHina, for 7 Euros (10$) a kilo, now with the Chile earthquake and the destruction in mines (Chile covers 20% of the planets copper) it is expected to rise to 15 Euros (22$) the kilo, prepare youselves...: http://translate.google.com/transla...ticia/165608/0/robo/cobre/Madrid/&sl=es&tl=en

I fully agree with the analysis of the author, but also have no clue how to deal with those guys. Shoot to kill? For some cable?

Here necessesity often is the reason (the crime was unknown before crisis), we now have reached 40% unemployment and no social security to fend off the problems for the whole families w/o income, and if I have to feed my family or pay the rent, well I probably would do a lot also (but more clever of cause, and with more profit, w/o endangering others :) )

If you think of damage to infrastructure, then it is a much more serious crime than just merely "stealing copper."

True but it is a good reason to upgrade to fibre.
This is just to funny, they are stealing the copper ground wires and electrical wire. Fiber cable does not work as a ground. It also is not efficient for power transmission it is communication cable.:D
