Site of Schmerbach village

This was the location of the village of Schmerbach for over 300 years. The town was located in East Germany, only a few hundred meters away from the border with West Germany. In 1973, the East German government decided that its close location to the border was a security threat, and destroyed the village, leaving only the transformer house standing. The residents were moved to the interior of East Germany.

The old border is actually a nice place to find some peace and quiet. Most of it was declared a nature preserve after the fall of the Iron Curtain. In the no-mans-land of the border, several endangered plants and animals found refuge. The old patrol road is now a hiking trail. At least one good thing came out of the Cold War!
