Here are a couple of stories that may be as new to you as they were to me before today.

1. ANNIE SOULS was a lady who lived in England at the time of WW1. Five of her sons went off to the war, and she lost them all.
She received a pension of 1 shilling for each son as a pension ( 20 shillings to the £.) She left her village a short time afterwards because she sufferred jealous mutterings about this money. Annie always said, of course, that she would prefer to have her sons back, and she would no longer stand up to respect the King.
A little later she lost her sixth and youngest son through meningitis.



2. Throughout 1916 England was terrorised by a new weapon which targetted woman and children for the first time. From Germany came a fleet of 115 Zeppelins which dropped huge bombs on town centres, with a view to demoralising the population. It had the reverse effect, and before the year was out the attacks were repelled with a German loss of 77 of their Zeppelins brought about by Bi-plane strikes. The English civilian casualties were 1500.
