India fails to evoke any strong feelings from other countries in the world, a new poll for the BBC suggests.

The survey for the BBC World Service asked how 39,435 people in 33 nations across the globe saw various countries.

On an average, 41% of the people polled did not say whether India had a positive or negative influence.

The poll found Iran having a negative influence in the world, while Japan is most widely seen to have a positive influence.


Interestingly, Indians themselves are the most tepid or modest in their self-estimates

The survey by the international polling firm GlobeScan and the University of Maryland took place between October 2005 and January 2006.


Mixed response

The results on India's influence in the world are mixed, with most deciding not to answer one way or another.

On average, 35% of the people polled said India had a positive influence, while 24% believed it has a negative influence.

"Many more countries (22) countries gave it [India] a net positive rating (6), but nearly all of these are plurality positions (20 positive, 5 negative)," the poll said.


Two countries, Iran and Afghanistan, overwhelmingly voted to say India had a positive influence in the world.


In Iran, 71% had a positive view of India. In Afghanistan, 59% believed the same.


The only country with widespread negative view about India's influence is the Philippines with 57% voting "mainly negative".


Interestingly, Sri Lanka is upbeat about its big neighbour - 49% had a positive view, while only 4% were negative.


India's nuclear-armed neighbour Pakistan was not in the list of countries polled.


The poll found European countries divided about India.


Great Britain and Russia turned up most positive with over 47% having a positive view of India in the two countries.


France and Finland viewed India most negatively - both being 44% negative and 27% positive.

Nearly half of Indians have a favourable view of their country


The US leans slightly positive towards India -39% had a positive view, while 35% thought negatively.


The poll found that Indians themselves were the "most tepid or modest in their self-estimates".


While in most countries a large majority give their country a positive rating, the picture is different in India.


Only 47% of Indians had a positive view of their country. Only 10% had a negative view.


A total of 1452 people above 18 years of age were polled in India.
The margin of error in polling ranged from 2.5% to 4%.

Iran , Afganistan Voting In India's Favour is a Natural Reaction we Share a Very Close Cultural Bonding With Both Countries Even though Both are Muslim Countries ............ There are religious as well Political reasons For that as well .

Filipinos will only hate India. Losing your call centre job to an Indian would evoke that kind of hatred obviously. Pity, lol.
Brazilians(US supporting India on the nuclear front and not Brazil), Filipinos(call centre and IT) are jealous of India because of the recent boom, as we are of China, at least I am.

Views of China have deteriorated sharply over the last year, but a plurality continues to view China positively in the world. Among the 20 countries polled both years, the number rating China mainly positively has dropped from 13 countries in 2004 to eight today, while those rating it negatively have risen from three countries to seven. On average, positive ratings of China have dropped 9 points.

What is most striking is the change that has occurred among European countries and Canada. While in 2004 four of the seven European countries polled plus Canada had a plurality with a positive view of China, today only one country—Spain—still has a plurality positive view. France’s positive rating dropped from 49 percent to 31 percent while a majority of 53 percent now view China negatively.

Italy’s positive rating dropped from 42 percent to 22 percent, and a 55 percent majority now have a negative view. Positive views dropped in Great Britain (46% to 40%) and Canada (49% to 36%), with pluralities now having a negative view.

Views in Russia also worsened—positive views dropping from a plurality positive of 42 percent to a divided 32 percent positive, 33 percent negative. Finland—polled for the first time—also came in 54 percent negative.

Negative shifts also occurred in Asia, most notably in South Korea. In 2004 South Koreans had been divided on China (49% positive, 47% negative), while currently a 58 percent majority views China negatively. Drops in positive ratings have also occurred in India (66% to 44%), the Philippines (70% to 54%), Australia (56% to 43%) and Indonesia (68% to 60%), but in all of these cases a plurality or majority are still positive.

Steven Kull comments, “While in the past many may have assumed that China was on an inevitable path to increasing liberalization, the new President Hu Jin Tao has clearly proven not to be China’s Gorbachev. Recent stories of tightening of state controls appear to have hurt China’s image in the world.”

Nonetheless, on balance, China still has considerably more countries holding a positive than a negative view of it. Of the 33 countries polled this year, 20 have a positive view (12 majorities, 8 pluralities) and only ten have a negative view (5 pluralities and 5 majorities). On average 45 percent gave China a positive rating and 27 percent a negative rating.

Positive views are particularly widespread in Africa—especially Senegal (73% positive), Nigeria (68%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (59%), Kenya (59%) and Tanzania (53%). Majority positive views were also found among a number of Muslim countries—Iran (66%), Afghanistan (58%), Iraq (55%), Saudi Arabia (54%), and Indonesia (60%). Positive majorities were also found in Brazil (57%) and the Philippines (54%).

Finland is Still on the Negative Side (Finland is the Country to watch out here Because they were Polling for the First time )

What difference does this poll really make? I wonder what the demographics of those polled are? What does it really reveal?
The whole premise of the world as a popularity contest is suspect in my mind.
The fact the radical Islam hates a successful Christian country is nothing new. Look to the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, then to the main zones of conflict: Spain, from which the descendants of the Moors were eventually expelled; the Middle East, where Crusaders and Muslims clashed for years; and the Balkans, where even very distant memories spurred atrocities even into the twentieth century.
I believe it's not a case of America becoming unpopular, it's more a case of us becoming the latest and largest Christian target of opportunity for radical Islamists. Now ponder if you will how each of those historic clashes have been resolved. Just my 2 cents folks.

Those who have money, power and "the good life" are always hated by those who don't. The negative veiw of the U.S. is driven more by envy than any other single factor.

A much more realistic appraisal of a country is the ratio of foreigners who wish to enter a country versus natives who wish to leave. I see no significant egress from the U.S., but I do clearly see a truly massive ingress.
