Post; Woman Finds WWII Grenade in Potatoes

ROME (AP) - A woman in a town near Naples got an unwelcome surprise when she bought a sack of potatoes at a nearby market, put them into water to peel and discovered one of them was a hand grenade apparently left over from World War II.

Olga Mauriello had put the potatoes in a vat of water and had just begun peeling them Tuesday when she found the explosive, covered in dirt, police said Wednesday.
An alarmed Mauriello, 74, called neighbors, who in turn called police.
Officers detonated the grenade in a park on Wednesday, state police said. The grenade was believed to have traveled with the potatoes from France, the ANSA news agency reported.

That's a new one. But, there is a lot of that stuff buried around here. It's quite common that bombs from the air war are discovered during construction work in the cities. Last October, a worker was killed during road work on the A3 autobahn when his cutter hit a bomb. Here's a quick article that has some stats about how much they find.

That would scare the ever-loving piss outta me...If you still find hand grenades in potatoes, then what else can you find left over from the second war to end all wars?

Well, the big one is this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Richard_Montgomery

an arms ship sunk in the Thames, down the river from London during WW2.

The list of stuff still there includes 1400 tonnes of TNT, as well as phosphorus bombs. Now that would be a big boom if it ever went off.

Is it being dealt with? That would be a Wal-Mart for the homegrown hajis you've got there planning the UK's demise.

Was it a potato-masher grenade?

I think they are just leaving it there and hoping. Let's hope the average suicide bomber knows nothing about making depth charges.
