How could the US let the communist win at the price of 60,000 American lives? I thought the US had the best army?

The military was forced to fight a war planned and controlled by Politicians in DC.

i think the US underestimated the effectivness of the guerilla tactics used by the VC. also spreading the war into cambodia was not a good idea either.

It was a war of containment, it was run by gd'd politians, and the dang hippies topped the cake.

We just didn't use everything we could've to win the war. Force concentration wasn't applied for anything except air missions. If we attacked the north with ground forces, then we would've had a korean like situation. I doubt the chinese would've responded by counter invading like in the korean war since the u.s. and chinese both had nuclear weapons at the time.
