Damn USMC03, you beat me to it. Lee was right on target.

I get this question a lot. I am from NYC. I fly a French flag because I work for the Paris Office of a International company.

Wolf - young man you have apologised quite enough. Although veterans here would wish to protect you, you are still nevertheless entitled to your intention to be a US marine if that is your ambition. I am sure you have taken on board the advice given you here. After all, this is a military forum, and while all wars are undesirable, young men like yourself demonstrate in many ways the best we have among us. So stand tall in the face of criticism .

What the veterans have to say regarding this thread is relevant, but you obviously had no intention to disrespect any of the fallen, far from it.

There are actually several version of that one floating around..
(you can't beat me on mil quotes.. )

"WAR IS HELL"
"There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory,
but boys, it is all hell."
or
"Some of you young men think that war is all glamour and glory,
but let me tell you, boys, it is all hell!"
-General William T. Sherman,
speech 1880 from which we derive the phrase "War is hell"

I've also found the same version as you, but it's actually from a book:

"I am sick and tired of war. Its glory is all moonshine.
It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard
the shrieks and groans of the wounded
who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.
War is hell."
From "On Killing" by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman

How about this one:-

Help - I think they're coming!

Del Boy. 1954.

Seriously - I agree with all that War is Hell, and usually other people's sons are sent to fight it. The amazing thing is that we still have a steady stream of brave young volunteers, who I guess save us from complete conscription; like the guys returning from Afghanistan and itching to get back. Very hard for us ordinary mortals to understand.

Would I recommend to my grandsons ? Very definitely not. Do I have friends with professional soldier sons serving a number of tours there - Yes. It's the existence of the wars themselves that is the problem, not the finest among our young men coming forward.

Am I saying all the wrong things? Please tell me and shut me up. Thank you, I would appreciate it.

Some of my friends must be crazy then, they joined for the express purpose of seeing action. Actually now that I think of it they are literally crazy, heh.

Here's another sad one, a brave volunteer reservist who didn't make it back. RIP.

RIP... it's funny as it seems war is heading in this direction: Old men fighting and young men talking.

War is hell.

Although, I will be serving the Canadian Army 20 or so years so I'll get my fair share of it. I wish not to go in any previous wars because I bet I'll be in the ones to come.
