Post; What war? What an interesting thought.

I have never considered which war I would have preferred. The one that took place in the 60's was bad enough for me - but -

- Dreams yet -

The time: 1835-1845
The location: Somewhere slightly east of the Rocky Mountains, a few miles from Pike's Peak in the land of the big steam.
The nearest white neighbor: At least 100 miles away.

In case you don't recognise the area it is in the mountain range which contains Yellowstone National Park. The buffalo still roam the plains in their millions and the 'red' savage still roams wherever the winds take him. I am dressed in hides and I carry a Kentucky Long Rifle of approximately 50 caliber bore. While I wish to have war with no man, the indians consider me to be a trespasser and try to kill me whenever our paths cross. I have managed to make friends with a few of the nomadic indian bands that want the things which trade with me can bring them (beads, metal knives and hand axes, etc). My time will last just a short time - progress will overtake me in just a few years (settlers) and my kind will blend back into the wilderness that they called home. I never did fit into what was described as 'polite' society and left home before I was able to receive a formal education.

In case you have not figured it out yet, I would have been one of the rare breed of men that were called Mountainmen and my war would have been a war of survival. My tendency to shun most people would not have been considered to be a shortcoming and my accuracy with a firearm would have assured at least a better than even chance of survival..

My life would probably have been a short one, but oh what a joyous time I would have had.

A fellow misanthrope!

This thread is a living testament to the Chinese proverb "Youth is wasted on the young". It also is a fine illustration of why most combat vets don't talk to non-combat vets about combat, you have to have been there to understand. I think it also highlights why militaries around the globe take young people, they're actually just dumb enough to WANT to go to war.

Yeah, I didn't even view this thread until now but bulldogg has it right.

I'm not doubting that there are quite enjoyable facets of war, but I agree with the old line that goes something like, "those that love war are the ones that have never seen it."

A truism I have never questioned.

Finally here is some sense being played out on this forum.
A little bit of realism...

I think the question was either meant to be "What war would you rather have been in if you had to choose between wars".
