This guy has a heck of a story, and it's actually (surprisingly enough) pretty clearly documented in the Wiki article.

In short, he was a Marine in Desert Storm. After 9/11, he reenlisted and did a tour in Iraq...again. In the course of his tour, he killed two Iraqi men, was court martialed for their murder and, ultimately exonerated. Check the link. I find it strange that, with the current allegations against Marines, Pantano's story isn't getting much press. I have yet to read his book, but it's certainly next on my list.
