BAGHDAD, Sept 25, 2006 (AFP) - A US soldier was shot and fatally wounded on
Monday near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, an insurgent hotbed, according
to a statement from coalition headquarters.

"A Task Force Lightning soldier was wounded by enemy fire Monday near Mosul.
The soldier was transported to a military hospital where he later died of
wounds," the statement said.

The latest fatality brought the number of US military personnel killed in
the Iraq campaign since their March 2003 invasion to 2,701, according to AFP
count based on Pentagon figures.
