BAGHDAD - A United States soldier was killed on Monday when a unit came
under fire in the middle of Baghdad, the US military reported.

"A Multi-National Division Baghdad Soldier died at approximately 10:30 am
October 2 from wounds he received when his unit was attacked by small-arms
fire in central Baghdad," the military said in a statement.

The latest fatality brings the number of US servicemen killed since the
March 2003 invasion of Iraq by US-led forces to 2,713 according to an AFP
count based on Pentagon figures.
