The UN Security Council has unanimously voted to impose sanctions on North Korea following recent missile tests.
The resolution demands UN members bar exports and imports of missile-related materials to North Korea and that it halt its ballistic missile programme.
The move comes after North Korea test-fired seven missiles including a long-range Taepodong-2 - believed to be capable of reaching Alaska.
North Korea has said it "totally rejects" the resolution.
'Unambiguous message'
Japan had produced its draft resolution for the 15-member Security Council just days after tests earlier this month.
To avert a veto from China, the resolution does not mention Chapter Seven of the UN Charter, which is legally binding and can authorise sanctions or even military action.
It requires all UN members to prevent imports from or exports to North Korea of materials that could be used in weapons of mass destruction.
The resolution underlines the need for North Korea "to show restraint and refrain from any action that might aggravate tension".
And it calls for Pyongyang to return to six-nation talks over its nuclear programme.
Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso urged North Korea to obey the vote.
"The council has acted swiftly and robustly in response to the reckless and condemnable act of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea," Japanese Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Shintaro Ito said.
The UK and US ambassadors to the UN described the resolution as strong and binding.
US Ambassador John Bolton said it sent "an unequivocal, unambiguous and unanimous message to Pyongyang".
He said that if North Korea did not comply with the resolution, the council could consider further action.
Missile moratorium
The country drew worldwide condemnation and sparked intense negotiations following its missile tests on 4 and 5 July.
The missiles failed and fell into the Sea of Japan.
It was Pyongyang's first test of a long-range missile since a self-imposed moratorium in 1999. The last time North Korea tested a long-range missile was in 1998, when it launched a Taepodong-1 over northern Japan.

If they're smart, demilitarize, depose the present government, and remodel the country after Japan and South Korea. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

u're right .they have nothing to lose.that's why i'm afraid eveything may have fallen on deaf ears.don't be suprised if u see more missile launches from NK.

Like N. Korea cares what useless UN says

There is no such thing as a binding UN resolution. If a nation doesn't like what the UN has to say they can just turn their cheeks and ignore the UN. Any binding resolution against N. Korea would never pass as China, North Korea's only ally, would veto it.

of course, N Korea will survive, but Kim's choice will become less and less.
the reason that kim is the leader of NK is because he had the supports from military, and Kim truely believes that if he has absolute control of a strong army he will be invincible. based on this kind of mentality, he will keep enhancing his military capacity. since he THINKS his military is really capable, he will not really give **** about What UN said.
but, if Kim still insists his plan of building nuclear weapon and testing long ranged missle as stubborn as mule, he will face a big problem. because of Kim's refusal of complying demands and persistence of tested-launch missle, UN will have not choice to impose much tougher sanction against Kim. the new resolution proposed will include chapter 7 of UN charter, a mandatory provision that has been enforced through economic sanction or MILITARY FORCE. because of huge pressure from all of the world and Kim's stupid insistence, chinese will have to choose the approve of new resolution. the question will be how far Kim can go without the aid from chinese and south Korean.

China ,NK's only friend,and Russia,all dont want to take any serious action agiast NK.They are mellow when it comes to this,I belive China doesnt want to beacause they sold weapons to NK.Russia doesnt want to beacause their military is still in shambles from the economic crash of the 90s.
