Post; U.S. Sub Skipper Loses Command After Collision

USA Today
January 30, 2007
Pg. 7

The commander of the USS Newport News has been removed from his post after the nuclear-powered submarine collided with a Japanese tanker Jan. 8 in the Strait of Hormuz, a Navy statement said. It said Matthew Weingart was relieved because of "a lack of confidence in his ability to command."
No one was hurt in the collision and no oil spilled in the strait between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The sub will return to the USA after repairs are made in Bahrain, the Navy said.
