News article: U.S. Delays Outpost In Iran

The Bush administration has shelved plans to set up a diplomatic outpost in Iran, in part over fears it could affect the U.S. presidential race or be interpreted as political meddling.
The proposal to establish an interest section in Tehran would have marked the first time U.S. diplomats have been stationed in the country since the 1980 hostage crisis.
Two administration officials familiar with the matter said the decision would be left to the next U.S. president because the move could be seen as a reward for Iran despite its nuclear intransigence, especially when Iran policy has become a key part of the heated presidential campaign.
