During World War I, 306 British soldiers were shot for desertion. It should be remembered that it was a different world then and you could get hung, shot or flogged for many different things and one should not compare the military from those days to the present set up. If some on fell asleep while on sentry this could caused large loss of life and any one caught asleep in the front lines was dealt with severely
