BAGHDAD, Aug 24, 2006 (AFP) - Insurgents killed three US soldiers across
Iraq in a roadside bombing and gunfights over the last 24 hours, the US
military said Thursday.

The military said insurgents attacked a soldier in Baghdad with small arms
at around 12:15 pm (0815 GMT) Thursday. He later died from his wounds.

Another soldier was killed when his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb south
of Baghdad earlier Thursday, while a third soldier died Wednesday in a
gunfight with "terrorists," the military said.

Two "terrorists" were also killed in the battle that took place as the
soldier's unit was conducting operations south of Baghdad against "foreign
terrorists," the military added.

The latest fatalities brought the US military's death toll in Iraq since the
March 2003 invasion to 2,617, according to AFP count based on Pentagon
figures.
