An intensive form of therapy for post-traumatic stress syndrome that requires patients to vividly and repeatedly recount trauma was found highly effective among current and former female soldiers, according to a study out today in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The therapy, known as "prolonged exposure," is nearly twice as effective as traditional means that focus on discussing symptoms, and more than 40% of women in the clinical trial no longer suffer from the syndrome, the study says. The Department of Veterans Affairs will train more therapists skilled in delivering the type of cognitive behavioral therapy, spokesman Matt Burns says.
