Post; State Dept. To Delay Arms Deal With Saudis

Washington Post
December 5, 2007
Pg. 9

The State Department has agreed to wait until January to pursue plans to sell precision-guided bombs to Saudi Arabia, after senior lawmakers said they want more time to review the deal.
Members of Congress were briefed on the deal last month, and Congress was to receive formal notification of the arms sales agreement as early as yesterday. That would kick off a 30-day review period during which lawmakers could move to block it.
But Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, asked Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Monday to delay the announcement until next month, when members will have more time to scrutinize the deal. Rice agreed to wait until Congress returns on Jan. 15, according to congressional aides.
