| Je suis aware | Post; South Korean citizen shot by North Korean soldierIt's sketchy right now but updates are to follow. I bet your ass that there isn't going to be any public reaction following this. UPDATE Alright so this is what happened. There is a tourist place in North Korea called Gumgang-san. South Koreans are allowed to go there with permission. The victim was on that tour and was apparently walking the beach at 4AM which is bad policy in North Korea to begin with. To make things worse she walked up the beach and crossed right into the perimeter of a North Korean military installation. The thing was although there was a fence, it did not cover the beach side so the tourist unwittingly walked straight in. When the North Korean guards challenged her, she tried to run away to which they opened fire. Personally don't think it's the North Korean soldiers' fault on this one and it was a case of a civilian gone stupid. On another note, that's sh*t hot shooting. I guess their shooting and their rifles aren't so bad after all. The CNN Article below: http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/as...ame/index.html SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea has blamed South Korea for the shooting death of a tourist near a mountain resort in the communist nation, according to reports. In this June 9, 2007, photo, South Korean tourists take pictures at Mt. Keumgang in North Korea. A statement from the North's tourism bureau Saturday expressed regret for the death of the 53-year-old South Korean woman. But it said responsibility for the incident "entirely rests with the south side" and said Seoul should apologize, The Associated Press reported. North Korea also said it would not accept a request that South Korean officials visit the resort for an investigation. The tourist, Park Wang-ja, was killed before dawn Friday after she entered a fenced-off restricted area along a beach near the resort. North Korea told the South Korean tour organizer that a soldier opened fire because Park ignored a warning to halt and instead ran away. Watch a report on the shooting »Kim Ho-nyun, a South Korean Unification Ministry spokesman, earlier said that it "deeply regrets that such an incident has happened." Kim said. The body was taken to a hospital in the South. The tours to the North have been suspended for the time being. ![]() The resort is part of a tightly controlled and well-marked area along the east coast of the Korean peninsula and one of only two areas South Korean tourists are allowed to travel to in the North. The incident occurred on the day South Korean President Lee Myung-bak proposed reopening stalled reconciliation talks with North Korea. ------------------------------------ So as you can see, stupid woman walked into a military installation and got shot. One hell of a shot though, although it doesn't specify distance it was during low light conditions and the North Koreans don't have much for night vision equipment. With all possible regret for this tragic incident, and the loss of an innocent life...what I noticed here is: "..responsibility for the incident "entirely rests with the south side" and said Seoul should apologize.." Wich clearly shows that the North Korea totally lacks the ability to realize individual differences and thinks that the entire population of South Korea is acting on behalf of the government in Seoul. A quite disturbing thought... Deeply sorry for making such a statment out of this tragic incident though. |

North Korea always has been disturbing. It's not they fail to see that it's the action of one person and one person only, they're just being pricks about the whole thing. The fault of the incident lies with the woman who trespassed. |

She didn't need to be shot. The soldier might of been in his rights but it still could of been avoided even after she ran. Edit - Typo Last edited by Wallabies; July 19th, 2008 at 11:27.. |

She didn't need to be shot in the eyes of our SOPs and ROEs but not in North Korea's.

Paradox though, while the NK soldier who fired those shots will probably be declared a "Hero of socialist labour and authrocities", be decorated with the order of "Red Sun and crossbones" plus get an extra ration of rice... I'd find myself standing trial for murder if i did the same thing on my watch. |

That's exactly what I mean. It's what I suspect. But we'll never know. That guy could be in a concentration camp as we speak. |

Looks like the soldier is going to be hung on a meat hook then.

Wouldn't that mean it wasn't entirely her fault? I agree, running away after being ordered to halt isn't a wise thing to do. ... But this is a 53-year-old woman, a tourist from a rival nation, nonetheless. I realize it's complicated. A soldier has his orders... But, at the same time, I can't completely blame the woman. Especially after understanding the fact that she didn't know what she was getting herself into.
