Topic: Secretary Of Defense At VMI Graduation

It was the long-awaited graduation day for cadets at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. More than half of the graduates will fight the War on Terror. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates was on hand to wish them well.
The day was four years in the making for 246 cadets from Virginia Military Institute. "What we have experienced is one of the most comprehensive... And I can assure you parents your money has been well spent," said valedictorian Cadet Jesse Burnette.
Proud parents looked as their sons and daughter cross the stage. But it's where these grads are headed next that distinguishes this ceremony from any other. "It is precisely during these times that the best and brightest are needed," insisted Gates.
Gates was VMI's commencement speaker and he says these cadets are needed to defend the United States during this time of war. It's a tall order for any 22-year-old, but a vital one.
"One of the strengths of America...have institutions like VMI...have grads to serve...This generation's challenge," remarked Gates.
Buretted said, "I have no doubt that the class of '08 will bring honor to this country."
More than half of VMI's graduates are commissioned as officers into the Armed Forces. Many of them will be heading overseas to join the Iraq war. After four years of rigorous academic and military study, the graduates will take the honor, character and self-discipline, all values instilled in them at VMI, to the front lines.
About that, Gates said to them on Friday, "Your country asks nothing more than that you live up to the values that you learned at this place for the last four years."
