I would compare the samurai of fuedal japan to the native american warrior. They both served as defense for local warlords and chiefs and in return they gained a spiritual and respectful place in society.

i think samurai is just like knight in Europe during the same period of time...they are the priviliged class, although below the Lords, and they follow some sort of code of honor
